In April 2023, I met an Australian man while he was in Austin for work. We hit it off instantly and shared a lively, spontaneous night together—I assumed I’d never see him again. But when he returned that September, we spent two more nights together, and soon after we were in constant contact. He invited me to Australia, and though we had only met three times, I felt at ease with him and wanted to see where it could lead.

In November, I traveled to Australia for two weeks, and the trip exceeded every expectation. Our connection only deepened as he showed me Adelaide, introduced me to friends and family, and spent meaningful time together. By the end, we had begun dating and decided I would return for several months to explore what a future together might look like.

I painted this piece in December 2023, just after that trip. If you turn the darker tan shape 90 degrees, it aligns with the piece below it—a symbol that even if things aren’t perfectly arranged, there is someone out there who complements you. This work captured my elation at having found someone who cherished me, despite the distance.

This painting was meant to be a birthday surprise for him during my return trip to Australia.
